Chickpea Burgers

Ah the oh so versatile chickpea. This little guy is packed with goodness and is amazing in a multitude of dishes. From the humble houmous to the mighty meringue, we make a multitude of dishes with chickpeas, and this one is one of the best!

  • 1 tin of chickpeas
  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 slice of bread (made into breadcrumbs)
  • 2 tablespoons of Dunns River Original Fry Mix
  • Zest of a lime
  • 2 tablespoons of polenta
  • 2 tablespoons oil


Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan and fry the onion until soft. Add the garlic and fry for 1 minute.

Remove from the heat. Add the onion, chickpeas, breadcrumbs, lime zest and Dunns River Fry mix to a food processor and whizz until smooth and combined.

Shape the mixture into burgers with your hands or a burger press if you’re jazzy.

Pop the polenta on a small plate and gently press the burgers into the polenta until lightly covered.

Heat the remaining oil in a pan and fry until golden brown.

Serve in a bun, on its own, with chips, wedges, or a bit of everything. Enjoy.
