Homemade Tomato Ketchup

In a bid to reduce our plastic consumption we had a go at making tomato ketchup. I’m not going to lie, it didn’t pass the kid test in this house. But I love it and will continue to make my own. Here’s how we did it.

  • 2 small tins of tomato purée (142g)
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons treacle
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Pinch of allspice
  • Up to a cup of water (depending on how thick you like your ketchup. We used between half and three quarters)

Now here’s the good bit, you just whack it in a blender and whizz until smooth. I’d recommend adding the water in smaller amounts until you get the consistency you like. It would be a pain to try and take it out afterwards. Probably impossible.
